Hello.
I picked up a new retainer set from your office yesterday. Unfortunately, when I arrived at home I was disappointed to discover that the retainers stopped at the second to last molars. They did not cover the very last molars in the very back of my mouth. I would very strongly prefer to have retainers that cover all of my teeth, without exceptions. Would it be possible to make a new set of full-coverage retainers that cover all teeth, including the final molars? Would it be possible to do this at your office by re-using the previous impression you took of my teeth? Please let me know if your office is able to resolve these concerns. I also apologize for not noticing that the first set of retainers was too short at my appointment.

I clearly understand your concern.
There was a reason why we made your retainers that manner.
There are many types of retainer. The clear retainer is one of patient’s favorites because it is thin and comfortable to wear.
However, they have one problem. Clear retainers do not let teeth settle down to make good occlusion because they cover all surfaces of teeth.
That is why most Doctors want to have patients wear other type of retainers that does not cover all surfaces especially occlusal surface.
However, If we had to make clear retainer, we want minimum coverage.
Especially, human jaws form not parallel but obtuse angle between upper and lower jaws.
When we close jaws, the very last teeth touch first and give wedging effect to other front teeth, which make tooth contact uneven and retainer unstable.
So most Dr. including me make clear retainer leaving last teeth not covered.
Even though the last teeth not be covered, they are not going to be crooked.
It is a little complicated explanation for ordinary people to understand.
However, it is the way we make retainers for the patient's best.
